💡 Tips
- The high altitude means it drops to quite cold temperatures at night; pack layers and a warm jacket.
- Visit the colonial church on the main square, which stands as one of the oldest and most beautiful in the region.
- The Sunday market is the most animated day of the week, drawing people from surrounding highland Lenca communities.
- Roads leading up to the municipality can be unpaved and rugged; a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for the trip.
🍽 Food
A warm, sweet, and thick corn beverage sold at the local market, absolutely well-suited for chilly highland mornings.
Traditional savory fried pastries generously filled with potatoes and meat, available from square-side street vendors.
Locally grown and roasted in the surrounding mountains, find it brewing at the small cafes around the square.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy fresh highland vegetables, local spices, and traditional woven goods directly from the makers.
Look for the highly distinctive red-and-black unglazed clay pottery that is completely typical of Lenca artisans.
Hike the lower trails on the outskirts for sweeping, quiet views of the pristine pine forests.
A deeply peaceful spot to sit, rest your legs, and admire the beautifully preserved historic architecture.
