La Palma is situated in the department of Chalatenango in northern El Salvador and is globally renowned as a center for folk handicrafts. The city gained international fame through the artist Fernando Llort, who in the 1970s introduced the naive painting style now known as the La Palma style. This art form, which often depicts nature and daily life in bright colors, characterizes the entire townscape and is applied to wood, textiles, and ceramics. Historically, La Palma played a pivotal role in the Salvadoran Civil War, as it was the site of the first peace talks between the government and guerrilla forces in 1984, earning it the nickname Cradle of Peace. Due to its elevation of approximately 1,000 meters, the city enjoys a cool mountain climate that attracts tourists from across the country. The surrounding landscape is defined by dense pine forests and steep mountain slopes, which are well-suited for ecotourism. In addition to handicrafts, the cultivation of vegetables and coffee is a primary economic factor for the local population.
