Montecristo National Park is a unique natural sanctuary located at the tripoint where the borders of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras meet, an area known as 'Trifinio'. Situated in the Santa Ana Department, it protects one of the most pristine mountain cloud forests in Central America. The peaks of the massif reach heights of up to 2,418 meters above sea level at 'Punto Trifinio', the precise convergence point of the three nations. Due to high humidity and near-constant cloud cover, the vegetation is incredibly lush, dominated by mosses, ferns, and epiphytes. The park is especially famous for its 'Orchid Garden', which hosts numerous rare and endemic orchid species. Faunistically, Montecristo provides a habitat for the resplendent quetzal, toucans, and rare mammals such as the Central American tapir and puma. The cool, damp climate stands in sharp contrast to the tropical lowlands found throughout the rest of the country. As a component of the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve, the park is an international symbol of transboundary conservation and is essential for regional water filtration and supply.
