💡 Tips

  • Roads in the Copán region can be unpaved; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended if you're driving.
  • Visit during the coffee harvest season (November to March) to see the processing firsthand.
  • Bring enough cash, as small mountain municipalities often lack ATMs.
  • The climate is cooler here than in the lowlands, so pack a light jacket for the evenings.

San Agustín is a small mountain municipality in Copán Department in western Honduras, specialised in coffee farming at mid and higher elevations. It lies in a hilly region of pine and oak forests, small streams and terraced coffee farms, often on steep slopes. Its economy revolves around coffee, corn, beans, cattle ranching and small forestry projects. Links with the departmental capital Santa Rosa de Copán and with surrounding Lenca villages shape market and commuter flows. The town core features the parish church, a central plaza and a number of warehouses where coffee is temporarily stored. The population is mostly rural, with a strong Catholic tradition and a clear awareness of regional coffee quality. San Agustín represents the typical coffee municipality of the mountainous west of Honduras.
