Guayabo National Monument (Costa Rica)

Weather…

Guayabo National Monument is Costa Rica's most significant and extensively excavated archaeological site, providing a window into the country's pre-Columbian past. Located on the southern slopes of the Turrialba Volcano, the city was inhabited from roughly 1000 BC until 1400 AD, reaching its zenith around 800 AD. The site showcases advanced engineering, featuring cobblestone roads (calzadas), raised stone platforms for circular dwellings, and a sophisticated underground aqueduct system that remains operational today. Guayabo likely served as a major regional chiefdom and ceremonial center, strategically positioned between the Caribbean lowlands and the Central Highlands. Petroglyphs found throughout the site depict local fauna and abstract symbols, suggesting a complex spiritual life and socio-political hierarchy. The reasons for the city's sudden abandonment shortly before the Spanish conquest remain a subject of intense academic debate. Spanning 218 hectares, the monument also preserves a fragment of primary pre-montane forest, blending cultural heritage with high biodiversity.
