Arenal Volcano is an active stratovolcano located in north-western Costa Rica, rising to an elevation of 1,670 meters above sea level. It was considered dormant for centuries until a catastrophic eruption on July 29, 1968, which destroyed the towns of Tabacón and Pueblo Nuevo, resulting in 87 fatalities. Following this event, the volcano entered a period of continuous activity that lasted until 2010, marked by frequent lava flows and pyroclastic explosions. Geologically, Arenal is a young volcano, estimated to be less than 7,500 years old, and is part of the Arenal Tilarán Conservation Area. Today, while in a resting phase, it remains a focal point for scientific study and a major geographic landmark within its namesake national park. The surrounding region is also significant for geothermal energy production and the vast Lake Arenal, which provides a large portion of the country's hydroelectric power.

Getting there
Access to the viewing areas is usually through the national park entrance, reached via well-maintained roads from the nearest base town. Many paths start directly from the visitor center, offering straightforward routes into the surrounding lush tropical landscape.
Best season
The dry season, typically spanning from mid-December to April, provides the best chances for clear skies and unobstructed views of the impressive peak. However, the lush greenery and hot springs remain inviting year-round, even when clouds naturally gather around the summit.

The surrounding area features a mix of flat volcanic ash trails, dense jungle paths, and some rugged segments formed by ancient lava flows. The hike is generally manageable for most fitness levels, though the uneven rocky sections require careful footing and good balance.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots are essential for safely navigating the volcanic rocks and muddy rainforest paths. A lightweight waterproof jacket, insect repellent, sun protection, and a swimsuit for relaxing in the natural thermal waters afterward are highly recommended items to bring.
Parking
Secure parking lots are generally provided right at the main entrance of the national reserve and at nearby private hot spring facilities. Leaving your vehicle in the central town area and using local shuttle services or taxis is another common and convenient approach.

Climbing up to the crater is strictly prohibited due to unpredictable toxic gases and the active nature of the environment. Always stay on marked trails within the forest, stay hydrated in the tropical heat, and heed any local advisories regarding recent seismic activity.
Time needed
Exploring the lower lava trails and walking through the surrounding forest typically takes about two to three hours. However, many visitors choose to make it a full-day experience by combining the hike with an extended soak in the region's famous geothermal springs.
