Liberia, frequently referred to as the White City, is the capital and largest urban center of the Guanacaste province in northwestern Costa Rica. The moniker is derived from the white gravel historically used in its streets and the whitewashed adobe buildings that characterized its early colonial architecture. Founded in 1769, the city has transformed into a strategic transit hub for international travelers, primarily due to the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport. Liberia is the guardian of the sabanero (cowboy) heritage, which is celebrated through rodeos, traditional music, and cattle-ranching festivals. The region's climate is distinct for its intense dry season, supporting one of the last remaining tropical dry forests in the world. While the city has experienced significant modernization and commercial growth, the historic district preserves colonial structures like the Agonía Church. It serves as the primary base for exploring the Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Rosa National Parks.
