Río Celeste is a mesmerizing river located within the Tenorio Volcano National Park in northwestern Costa Rica. It is globally renowned for its brilliant turquoise waters, which possess an almost surreal quality. This unique optical phenomenon begins at "El Teñidero," the confluence where two clear rivers, the Río Buenavista and Quebrada Agria, meet. The striking color is not caused by a chemical reaction but rather by the physical scattering of sunlight off aluminosilicate particles that coat the rocks on the riverbed. A major highlight along the river is the memorable Río Celeste Waterfall, which plunges approximately 30 meters into a deep blue pool. Visitors can also explore hot springs and bubbling mud pots, which are clear indicators of the nearby Tenorio Volcano's geothermal activity. The hiking trail winding through the dense primary rainforest gives spectacular views of the region's diverse flora and fauna. To preserve the delicate ecological balance, swimming in the river is strictly prohibited within the national park boundaries. Río Celeste remains one of Costa Rica's most extraordinary natural wonders.
