Nanumea Atoll (Tuvalu)

Weather…

Nanumea is the northernmost atoll of Tuvalu, situated near the Gilbert Islands, which has resulted in close historical ties with Kiribati. The atoll consists of five main islands, with Nanumea and Lakena being the largest, surrounding a spacious lagoon. During World War II, Nanumea served as a strategic base for U.S. forces, who constructed an airstrip in 1943 and utilized the lagoon for seaplanes. Remnants of this military presence, such as rusted aircraft wreckage and bunkers, can still be found on the island today. Local culture is deeply influenced by the legend of the founders Tefolaha and his sons, celebrated annually during 'Te Po o Tefolaha'. The economy is based on fishing and subsistence farming, with Lakena serving as the primary island for food cultivation. The atoll's isolation has helped preserve many traditional customs and the unique Nanumea dialect of the Tuvaluan language.
