Site of the Bombing of Ocotal (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The site of the Bombing of Ocotal marks one of the most controversial events in Nicaraguan history. On July 16, 1927, General Sandino's forces launched an attack on the town of Ocotal, which was occupied by US Marines and the National Guard. In response, five US Marine DH-4 biplanes conducted a massive aerial assault, recognized as one of the first coordinated dive-bombing attacks in history. The bombing caused severe destruction in the town center and resulted in hundreds of casualties among both the insurgents and the civilian population. This event garnered international attention and significantly galvanized opposition to the US military presence in Central America. Today, a monument in Ocotal honors the victims and remembers the battle's importance to the national liberation struggle. Much of the town's architecture was rebuilt following the attacks, while its colonial layout was largely preserved. The site remains a core part of Nicaragua's historical consciousness.
