San Juan del Río Coco is a young and dynamic municipality in the Madriz department, which gained its independence in 1964 after separating from Telpaneca. The town is situated in one of Nicaragua's most significant coffee-growing regions and is globally renowned for its production of organically certified highland coffee. Geographically, the area is marked by the rugged relief of the Nicaraguan Central Cordillera and its proximity to the upper reaches of the Coco River. Elevations of up to 1,200 meters above sea level provide a mild climate well-suited for cultivating specialty coffee varieties. Despite its relatively short history, the town has developed into an important economic center for the coffee sector, with numerous cooperatives managing local production. The cultural identity of the residents is closely intertwined with the agricultural cycle of the coffee harvest, which attracts thousands of seasonal workers to the region every year.
