San José de Cusmapa is the highest town in Nicaragua, perched on a mountain ridge in the Madriz department at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. The municipality was officially established in 1962 and is inseparably linked to the life's work of the Italian Salesian priest Rafael Maria Fabretto, who significantly promoted the region's development. The cool climate and mist-shrouded mountain forests define the spectacular landscape, which provides sweeping views as far as the Pacific Ocean and the Maribios volcanoes. A large portion of the population belongs to the Chorotega indigenous community, which has preserved its traditions in weaving and the production of pine needle handicrafts. The local economy relies on the cultivation of grains and high-quality coffee, as well as artisanal production. Cusmapa is also considered an important center for social projects that promote education and trades for rural youth.
