San Rafael del Norte Historic Site (Nicaragua)

Weather…

San Rafael del Norte is a pleasant mountain town in the Jinotega department that holds a central place in Nicaraguan history. The town is inextricably linked to General Augusto C. Sandino, who established one of his primary operations centers here during his struggle against the US intervention. A major historical milestone was the marriage of Sandino to Blanca Arauz on May 18, 1927, in the local parish church. Blanca Arauz was not only his wife but also a crucial telegraph operator and strategist for the resistance. Situated at an elevation of over 1,000 meters, the town is renowned for its cool climate and misty landscapes. The monumental Church of San Rafael Arcángel dominates the townscape and houses significant religious artworks. Today, the museum located in the former home of Blanca Arauz commemorates the heroic story of the couple. The region is also a major center for the production of high-quality highland coffee.
