Talgua Caves (Honduras)

Weather…

The Talgua Caves, also known as the "Cave of the Glowing Skulls," are located in the department of Olancho, near the city of Catacamas. These limestone caves gained international fame in 1994 when a group of hikers discovered a hidden chamber containing human remains. The uniqueness of these finds lies in the fact that, over centuries, the bones were covered with a layer of calcite, causing them to sparkle brilliantly under light. Archaeological research has shown that the cave was used as a burial site between 1000 and 800 BC, making it one of the oldest recorded ritual burial sites in Central America. The identity of the people buried there remains a mystery, as they lived long before the peak of the Mayan civilization. Beyond the burial chamber, the cave system impresses with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the subterranean Talgua River that flows through the caverns. Today, a portion of the caves is open to tourists, with strict regulations in place to preserve the fragile structures. The site is a compelling example of the intersection between geology and early human cultural history.
