Cayos Cochinos (Honduras)

Weather…

The Cayos Cochinos are a group of islands located approximately 12.5 kilometers off the northern coast of Honduras, near La Ceiba. The archipelago consists of two main volcanic islands, Cayo Grande and Cayo Menor, and 13 smaller coral cays that belong to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. In 2003, the Honduran government designated the area as a Marine Natural Monument to preserve its exceptional marine biodiversity and coral formations. One of the islands' most famous residents is the endemic pink boa constrictor, a species found nowhere else on Earth. The local residents are predominantly Garifuna people, particularly on Cayo Chachauate, where they maintain their traditional fishing culture and unique heritage. Tourism is highly controlled to minimize environmental impact, with Cayo Menor serving primarily as a base for scientific research and conservation efforts. The pristine condition of the reefs makes this area a vital sanctuary for numerous endangered marine species.

Parking
Vehicles must be left on the mainland at secure parking facilities in La Ceiba or at the tour operator's base. There are no cars or roads on the islands themselves.
⚠️
Safety
Be prepared for a potentially bumpy boat ride if the wind picks up. When in the water, avoid touching the delicate coral reefs and be mindful of local marine life, including jellyfish.
