Guanaja Island (Honduras)

Weather…

Guanaja Island is one of the three major Bay Islands of Honduras, situated approximately 70 kilometers off the country's northern coast. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 during his fourth voyage, and he originally named it "Isla de los Pinos" due to its dense pine forests. The island measures about 18 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, with its highest point, Michael Rock Peak, reaching 412 meters above sea level. A distinctive feature of Guanaja is the main settlement of Bonacca, which is built on a small offshore cay and is often called the "Venice of Honduras" because of its internal canals. Guanaja is world-renowned for its crystal-clear waters and surrounding coral reefs, forming part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Unlike its neighbors Roatán and Utila, Guanaja remains less commercialized, offering a more secluded and authentic Caribbean experience. The local economy is driven by fishing, shrimp farming, and high-end diving tourism that emphasizes the preservation of the marine environment. The island also is home to several natural waterfalls, providing a unique terrestrial attraction amidst the tropical sea.
