Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve (Honduras)

Weather…

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve is located in the La Mosquitia region of northeastern Honduras and comprises one of the largest remaining virgin rainforests in Central America. Spanning an area of approximately 5,250 square kilometers, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its immense ecological and cultural significance. The reserve is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the jaguar, the Great Green Macaw, and the Central American tapir. Geographically, the area is defined by the Río Plátano, which winds through dense jungles and coastal lagoons toward the Caribbean Sea. Beyond its biological wealth, the territory is inhabited by indigenous groups such as the Pech, Miskito, and Tawahka, who maintain their ancestral lifestyles and connection to the land. In recent years, the reserve has faced significant pressure from illegal logging and cattle ranching, leading to its placement on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Historically and archaeologically, the region is also famous for being the purported location of the legendary "White City" (Ciudad Blanca).
