La Ceiba is a major port city on the Caribbean coast of Honduras and the capital of the Atlántida Department. The city derives its name from a massive Ceiba tree that once stood near the old pier, providing shade to early settlers. Known as 'La Novia de Honduras' (The Bride of Honduras), it is celebrated for its bustling atmosphere and for hosting the Gran Carnaval Internacional de La Ceiba, the nation's largest festival. Economically, the city's history is deeply intertwined with the banana industry and the Standard Fruit Company, which significantly influenced its urban development. Geographically, it is situated at the foot of the majestic Pico Bonito mountain, whose namesake national park is a premier destination for ecotourism. Its proximity to the Cayos Cochinos also makes it a favored gateway for divers and snorkelers. Although banana exports have declined over time, La Ceiba has successfully reinvented itself as a regional center for tourism and professional services.
