Trujillo Colonial Center (Honduras)

Weather…

The historic center of Trujillo is a site of exceptional significance in the history of Honduras and the Americas. It is where Christopher Columbus landed on August 14, 1502, during his fourth and final voyage to the American mainland, marking the location of the first Christian mass celebrated in the New World. The city was officially founded on May 18, 1525, and served as the first capital of Honduras. Colonial architecture is preserved today through structures such as the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista and the Santa Bárbara Fortress, which was built in the 17th century to defend against pirate attacks. For centuries, Trujillo was a major export port for gold and silver, making it a frequent target for buccaneers. In the mid-19th century, the city was the site of the execution of the American adventurer William Walker in 1860. Geographically, Trujillo is located on one of the deepest bays in the world, providing it with ongoing strategic importance for maritime navigation. The center preserves a rich cultural heritage that blends Spanish, British, and indigenous influences.
