Protección is a mountain municipality in Santa Bárbara Department in western Honduras that specialises in coffee farming. It lies in a humid, hilly highland zone with dense forests, small streams and terraced cultivation. Its economy is built on high-altitude specialty coffee, corn and bean fields, cattle ranching and small family farms. The town center features a traditional plaza, the parish church and several shops along with coffee warehouses. The population is mainly rural, with a strong Catholic tradition, saint-day festivals and active cooperatives. In terms of transport, Protección is linked by secondary roads with the departmental capital Santa Bárbara and with the western coffee areas tied to Copán. The municipality is a clear example of the small but economically valuable coffee communities of western Honduras.
