Ocotepeque Trading Hub (Honduras)

Weather…

Ocotepeque, the capital of the department of the same name in the far west of Honduras, serves as a vital trading hub at the triple border with El Salvador and Guatemala. Its strategic position on the Pan-American Highway makes the city a center for cross-border freight traffic, with agricultural products such as coffee, grains, and livestock being the most important trade goods. After the original city was almost completely destroyed in 1934 by a devastating flood of the Marchala River, reconstruction took place at a safer site, resulting in an orderly urban layout today. The local economy benefits massively from the El Poy (Salvador) and Agua Caliente (Guatemala) border crossings, which are passed by hundreds of trucks daily. Besides trade, the production of high-quality highland coffee plays a central role, as the surrounding mountains belong to the Trifinio mountain range. The region is also known for its ecological importance, which promotes ecotourism as a complementary economic factor.
