Lepaera is a town in Lempira Department in the western mountains of Honduras, set at about 1,200 m elevation in a cool pine-forest zone. The municipality is best known nationally for its tradition of hand-woven palm-fiber hats, often marketed as Panama-style hats, which are a trademark of local craft families. Its economy also relies on mid-altitude coffee, corn and beans, forestry and a number of small dairy farms. The town has a clearly laid-out main plaza with the parish church, town hall, market and several workshops where hats and other fiber products are made. The surrounding mountains belong to the cultural heart of the Lenca world and shape the identity, language and customs of the population. Lepaera embodies the image of a calm Lenca town with a strong handicraft economy.
