Atitlán Volcano (Guatemala)

Weather…

Atitlán Volcano is an imposing stratovolcano in the Guatemalan Highlands, situated directly on the southern shore of Lake Atitlán. Standing at 3,535 meters above sea level, it forms a striking backdrop alongside its neighbors Tolimán and San Pedro, creating what is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in Central America. Geologically, the volcano is relatively young, having formed during the Holocene epoch within the Atitlán III caldera. Its slopes are densely forested in the lower reaches, while the summit area is often shrouded in clouds and displays evidence of past lava flows. Historically, Atitlán is an active volcano, with its most violent documented eruptions occurring in the 19th century, specifically between 1826 and 1853. Although it has not produced a major eruption in over 150 years, it remains under close monitoring due to persistent fumarolic activity and its proximity to populated settlements.
