Tazumal
Tazumal is the most significant Maya archaeological site in El Salvador, located in the town of Chalchuapa within the Santa Ana Department. Settlement of the area dates back to approximately 1200 BC, with the monumental architecture primarily originating from the Classic period between 250 and 900 AD. The main pyramid stands 24 meters high and displays distinct architectural influences from Teotihuacán in central Mexico. The site encompasses temple platforms, noble tombs, and a sophisticated stone drainage system. Stanley Boggs led the first systematic excavations and reconstruction efforts of the adobe structures during the 1940s. Today, the site features an on-site museum displaying ceramics, jade jewelry, and sculptures that demonstrate the advanced cultural status of its former inhabitants. The archaeological zone covers roughly ten square kilometers and is regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Columbian civilization in Central America.
