Santa Ana is the second-largest city in El Salvador and the capital of the Santa Ana Department in the western part of the country. Founded in 1569, the city experienced a significant period of prosperity during the late 19th century as a result of the coffee export boom. This wealth funded the construction of its historic center's most magnificent buildings, most notably the Cathedral of Santa Ana, a Neo-Gothic masterpiece started in 1906. Facing the cathedral is the National Theatre of Santa Ana, celebrated for its Renaissance-inspired architecture and exceptional acoustics. Geographically, the city sits in a highland valley at an elevation of 665 meters, surrounded by fertile volcanic soil good for agriculture. Nearby, the Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) stands as the highest peak in the country and is a major destination for mountaineering. The region is also home to Lake Coatepeque, a massive volcanic crater lake famous for its lively turquoise waters. Today, Santa Ana retains its title as 'La Ciudad Morena' and serves as a primary industrial and cultural anchor for western El Salvador.
