San Miguel is the third-largest city in El Salvador and the primary economic and commercial engine of the country's eastern region. Founded on May 8, 1530, by Spanish Captain Luis de Moscoso, the city is situated in a valley at the foot of the imposing San Miguel Volcano, also known as Chaparrastique. Leveraging its surrounding fertile lands, the city grew into a critical hub for agricultural production and regional trade. Its architectural centerpiece is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Peace, a 19th-century structure that remains one of the largest religious edifices in the nation. San Miguel is world-famous for hosting the 'Gran Carnaval de San Miguel' every November, which is the largest folk festival in Central America, drawing tens of thousands of participants from across the globe. The local climate is tropical and significantly warmer than the central highlands. Despite the ongoing geological activity of its namesake volcano, San Miguel continues to serve as an animated center for higher education and professional services, anchoring the economy of El Salvador's eastern departments.
