Cerro Verde National Park, officially known as Los Volcanes National Park, is one of the most spectacular natural destinations in El Salvador. It encompasses three iconic volcanoes: Santa Ana (Ilamatepec), Izalco, and the extinct Cerro Verde. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,030 meters, the park gives panoramic views of Lake Coatepeque. Cerro Verde itself is a dormant volcano whose crater is now covered by a dense cloud forest, home to over 120 bird species, including the turquoise-browed motmot. The Izalco volcano, once called the "Lighthouse of the Pacific," is famous for its nearly well-suited conical shape and can be climbed from this base. Santa Ana is the country's highest volcano and features a sulfurous crater lake. The park plays a central role in national tourism, blending volcanological education with hiking opportunities across various climatic zones. The infrastructure includes well-developed trails and scenic lookout points.
