La Palma Artisan Town (El Salvador)

Weather…

Located in the cool highlands of Chalatenango near the Honduran border, La Palma is a pretty town world-renowned for its unique artisan tradition. The town's artistic identity was transformed in 1972 when the Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort arrived and began teaching the local population his Naïve art style. Llort founded the "La Semilla de Dios" cooperative, which encouraged the use of natural materials like Copinol seeds as canvases for colorful, stylized depictions of rural life. Today, approximately 75% of the town's residents are involved in the production of handicrafts, making it the premier center for art in the country. The town itself is an outdoor gallery, with many walls and buildings decorated with the bright, geometric patterns characteristic of the "La Palma" style. Surrounded by lush pine forests and a temperate climate, it features a refreshing cultural and geographic contrast to the tropical lowlands.
