Făgăraș Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

Făgăraș Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval strongholds in Romania, with its construction dating back to 1310. Originally built on the site of an older earth fortification, it was designed to protect southern Transylvania from Tatar and Ottoman incursions. In the 16th century, the castle was transformed into a luxurious Renaissance-style princely residence by Prince Balthasar Báthory, while simultaneously being reinforced with modern bastions and a massive moat. The moat, which remains filled with water today, makes it one of the few surviving water castles in the region. Under the rule of Gabriel Bethlen in the 17th century, the fortress reached its cultural and political zenith as a Transylvanian princely seat. A darker chapter of its history occurred in the mid-20th century when it was repurposed as a prison for political dissidents under the communist regime. Today, the impressive building houses the Museum of the Făgăraș Land and a municipal library, offering visitors a detailed look into the region's aristocratic and military past.
