Council Square Brașov
Council Square (Piața Sfatului) is the historic heart of Brașov and one of the most famous public spaces in Transylvania. At its center stands the Council House (Casa Sfatului), originally built in the 15th century as a watchtower and later serving as the city's administrative hub. The square is ringed by beautifully preserved buildings showcasing Baroque, Renaissance, and Neoclassical styles, many of which belonged to wealthy Saxon merchants. Dominating the skyline nearby is the Black Church, the largest Gothic church in Southeastern Europe. Historically, the square was the site of major regional fairs, public trials, and festivities. Today, it remains the focal point of Brașov's social life, hosting international events like the Golden Stag music festival and numerous cultural markets. The surrounding cobblestone streets and the panoramic view of Mount Tâmpa make it a quintessential example of medieval urban planning in the Carpathian region.
