Bran Castle
Bran Castle, situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, is one of Romania's most iconic landmarks, globally renowned for its association with the Dracula legend. While the Teutonic Knights built an initial fortification here in 1211, the current stone structure dates back to 1377, following a royal charter granted by King Louis I of Hungary to the Saxons of Brașov. Perched strategically on a sheer cliff, the castle served for centuries as a vital defensive outpost against Ottoman invasions and as a prominent customs station. Its architecture is characterized by winding corridors, narrow stairways, and a blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements. In 1920, the castle was gifted to Queen Marie of Romania, who transformed it into a beloved royal summer residence, adding her personal aesthetic touch to the interior and surrounding gardens. Despite the historical connection to Vlad the Impaler being minimal, the castle continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, drawn by its medieval atmosphere and the intertwining of royal history with popular myth.
