Brown Bear (Romania)

Weather…

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is Europe's largest land predator, with the Romanian Carpathians hosting one of its most significant populations globally. Romania is home to an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 individuals, accounting for roughly 40% of the entire European population outside of Russia. These massive mammals favor vast coniferous and deciduous forests, typically establishing territories at altitudes between 600 and 1,800 meters. Despite their classification as carnivores, brown bears are opportunistic omnivores, with a diet consisting mostly of berries, nuts, roots, and insects, supplemented by fish or mammals. During the winter months from November to March, they retreat into dens for hibernation, a physiological state that allows them to conserve energy when food is scarce. Despite their bulky appearance, they are remarkably agile, capable of reaching speeds of 50 km/h and possessing excellent climbing and swimming skills.
