The Black Church (Biserica Neagră) in Brașov is the largest Gothic cathedral in Romania and a primary landmark of the Transylvanian region. Its construction began around 1383 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church and was completed nearly a century later. The building earned its name after the Great Fire of 1689, which left its walls charred and blackened by smoke. Standing 89 meters long and featuring a 65-meter high tower, it dominates the city's central square. Inside, the church houses one of the finest collections of Anatolian carpets in Europe, donated by local Saxon merchants between the 17th and 18th centuries. Another major highlight is the magnificent Buchholz organ, built in 1839, which remains one of the largest and most powerful mechanical organs in the region. As a center for the Lutheran community and a masterpiece of medieval architecture, the Black Church attracts thousands of visitors annually who come to admire its historical grandeur and acoustic excellence.
