Prejmer Fortified Church (Romania)

Weather…

The Prejmer Fortified Church is the most robust and best-preserved military-religious structure of its kind in Southeastern Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Originally established by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, it was later expanded in the Gothic style and heavily fortified by the local Saxon community. Its most striking feature is the circular defensive wall, standing 14 meters high and 5 meters thick, designed to withstand intense artillery fire. Uniquely, the inner side of the wall contains 272 rooms distributed over four levels, which served as a refuge for the entire village and storage space for food during sieges. Each family in the community had a designated, numbered room. The central church follows a Greek cross plan and houses one of Transylvania's oldest winged altars, dating back to the 15th century. Protected by a water moat and equipped with an 'organ of death' (a multi-barrel firing device), the fortress remained nearly impregnable throughout its long history.
