Brașov is a historic city positioned in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, often considered one of the most beautiful urban centers in Romania. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in the early 13th century and subsequently settled by Saxons, the city (formerly known as Kronstadt) grew into a powerful trading post. Its medieval core is exceptionally well-preserved, featuring massive defensive walls, bastions, and the famous Council Square (Piața Sfatului). The city's most iconic landmark is the Black Church, a towering Gothic structure that earned its name after the great fire of 1689. Brașov has a unique blend of mountain air and cosmopolitan city life. Visitors can take a cable car to the top of Tâmpa Mountain for a panoramic view of the red-roofed old town or explore the nearby Poiana Brașov, Romania's premier ski resort. Its strategic location makes it an excellent base for exploring the legendary Bran Castle and the fortified churches of Transylvania, blending myths, history, and remarkable natural landscapes.
