Râșnov Citadel (Romania)

Weather…

Râșnov Citadel is one of the best-preserved peasant fortresses in Transylvania, built by local villagers as a sanctuary against Tatar and Ottoman invasions. Unlike royal castles, Râșnov was constructed in the 13th century on a limestone hill to serve as a long-term refuge for the community, complete with houses, a school, and a chapel. A focal point of the site is the famous 146-meter-deep well, which, according to legend, was carved into the solid rock by Ottoman prisoners over 17 years. Its strategic location allowed it to control the vital commercial route connecting Transylvania and Wallachia via the Bran Pass. After losing its military significance in the 18th century, the citadel fell into disrepair but has been extensively restored in recent decades. Today, it stands as a major tourist attraction, featuring historical museums and themed festivals that recreate its rich medieval atmosphere.
