Cârța Monastery (Romania)

Weather…

The Cistercian Monastery of Cârța was founded around 1202 and is recognized for introducing early Gothic architecture to Transylvania. Established by monks from Igriș Abbey, the monastery served as a vital center for spreading Western European building techniques throughout medieval Romania. The structure displays characteristic features such as pointed arches and ribbed vaults, blended with lingering Romanesque influences. Over the centuries, the abbey endured multiple Mongol and Ottoman raids before being officially dissolved by King Matthias Corvinus in 1474. Currently, the site features the imposing ruins of the monastic church, including its iconic western facade and open nave, while the choir section remains an active Evangelical church. Located in Sibiu County near the Olt River, it stands as a testament to the cultural and religious exchange of the Middle Ages.
