The Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești, near Brașov, is the largest brown bear sanctuary in the world and a global symbol of animal welfare. Spanning 69 hectares of lush oak forest in the Carpathian Mountains, it provides a safe haven for bears rescued from cruel captivity in circuses or restaurants. Founded by the 'Millions of Friends' Association, the sanctuary is not a traditional zoo but a refuge where the well-being of the animals is the top priority. Visitors can observe the bears in their natural habitat, climbing trees and bathing in ponds, through strictly controlled guided tours. Libearty has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the most ethical and impressive conservation projects in Europe.

Best season
Visits are possible year-round, but spring and autumn are when the bears are most active due to mild temperatures. In summer they often retreat to shaded areas and are less visible.
Best time of day
Guided tours usually take place in the morning, when the bears are more active after their night's rest. Late afternoon also sees increased activity, especially around feeding times.
Etiquette
Always stay on the designated paths and keep noise to a minimum so as not to startle the animals. Feeding the bears with outside food is strictly prohibited as it endangers their health.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear is recommended as the terrain can be uneven. A camera with zoom is useful for photographing the bears from a safe distance without disturbing them.
Getting there
The sanctuary is located near Zărnești in the Carpathians and is reachable by car via the DN73 road. On site there is a car park and a visitor centre where guided tours start.
What to expect
The bears can hide in their large enclosure, so patience is needed until you spot them. Guides often give helpful hints, but sometimes it takes a while for the animals to appear.
