Cosigüina Volcano is a massive stratovolcano located on the Cosigüina Peninsula in northwestern Nicaragua, overlooking the Gulf of Fonseca. It is historically significant for its catastrophic eruption on January 22, 1835, which ranks as one of the most powerful volcanic events in modern American history. The explosion was so immense that its sound traveled over 1,900 kilometers to Bogotá, Colombia, and the resulting ash cloud caused total darkness as far away as Mexico City. This massive eruption caused the summit to collapse, creating a vast caldera approximately two kilometers in diameter. Today, the floor of this crater is occupied by a memorable turquoise lagoon, surrounded by high cliffs and dense primary forest. The area is protected as a nature reserve and serves as a vital sanctuary for the endangered yellow-naped amazon parrot. Reaching the current summit of 872 meters provides hikers with an unparalleled panoramic view where the borders of Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador meet across the waters of the gulf.
