Laguna de Apoyo is a large crater lake in Nicaragua, situated within the caldera of an extinct volcano that erupted approximately 23,000 years ago. The lake has a diameter of about six kilometers and, with an estimated depth of nearly 200 meters, it is the lowest point in Central America. Its waters are slightly saline and naturally warmed by lingering geothermal activity. Declared a nature reserve in 1991, Laguna de Apoyo hosts a unique ecosystem with several endemic fish species, most notably cichlids of the genus Amphilophus. The steep interior walls of the crater are clad in tropical dry forest, providing a habitat for howler monkeys, iguanas, and over 200 species of birds. As an endorheic basin with no surface inlet or outlet, its water level is sustained by rainfall and underground springs. Today, the lagoon is a premier eco-tourism destination known for its pristine water and tranquil environment.
