León Cathedral (Nicaragua)

Weather…

León Cathedral, officially known as the Real e Insigne Basílica de la Asunción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, is the largest cathedral in Central America and a premier example of the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical architecture. Construction on the present structure began in 1747 and continued until 1814. Designed with thick walls and a sturdy profile to withstand seismic activity, the cathedral has survived numerous earthquakes and eruptions from the nearby Momotombo volcano. In 2011, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its significant artistic and historical value. The cathedral serves as the final resting place for several prominent Nicaraguans, most notably the renowned poet Rubén Darío. Its distinctive white walkable roof, featuring a series of domes and sculptures, provides panoramic views of the city of León and the surrounding volcanic range.
