Relief
The Estelí Plains are situated in northern Nicaragua on a high plateau at an average elevation of 840 meters, surrounded by rugged mountain ranges. This unique geographic setting grants the region a significantly cooler and more temperate climate compared to the Pacific lowlands, making it perfectly suited for tobacco cultivation. Historically, the plains were a central theater for significant battles during the Nicaraguan Revolution in the late 1970s, earning the city of Estelí the title 'The Diamond of the Segovias.' The volcanic soils are exceptionally rich in minerals, which supports the production of world-class premium cigars that are exported globally. Beyond tobacco, the region is highly productive in livestock farming and dairy manufacturing. The plains also serve as a gateway to the nearby Miraflor Nature Reserve, which is internationally renowned for its incredible variety of wild orchids and bird species.

The plateau is accessible by road directly from the nearby city. Local buses and taxis generally service the main transport routes that run across the wide, open plains.
Best season
The typical dry season provides the most comfortable conditions for exploring the agricultural open landscapes. This is when the unpaved local roads are most easily navigable.

The environment consists mostly of flat to gently rolling terrain, intersected by country roads and rural walking paths. There are hardly any significant changes in elevation.
What to bring
Light, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat are highly recommended for the unshaded landscape. Make sure to bring plenty of drinking water along for the excursion.
