Piraera is a remote Lenca municipality in Lempira Department in the high mountains of southwestern Honduras. It lies in a difficult-to-reach area of deep valleys and steep slopes, where pine forests, coffee patches and small plots dominate the landscape. Most residents speak Spanish, yet Lenca identity is still strongly present in the local festival cycle, traditional medicine, crafts and communal life. The economy is based on corn and bean farming, coffee, cattle ranching and traditional basketry. The town core, set around a small plaza, includes the parish church, a school and a few simple shops. The surrounding area is one of the less developed mountain regions of Honduras and works as a clear example of the remote, indigenous-rooted world shared by many Lenca highland communities.
