Champerico is a significant Pacific port located in the Retalhuleu department, serving as a vital link for Guatemala's international trade since its official establishment in 1871. Originally developed to facilitate the massive export of coffee during the Liberal Revolution, the port's infrastructure has evolved significantly over the decades to accommodate changing maritime requirements. Although it faced a decline in commercial shipping prominence with the rise of Puerto Quetzal, it remains a critical center for the industrial fishing sector and local logistics on the southwest coast. The pier, a historic engineering landmark, extends into the ocean to bypass the shallow coastal waters, reflecting the technical challenges of 19th-century maritime construction. Today, the facility supports the regional economy primarily through shrimp processing and seafood logistics for both domestic and international markets. Its strategic position continues to offer value for coastal surveillance and maritime safety operations in the southwestern Pacific region of Guatemala.
