Santiaguito Lava Dome

Santiaguito is a highly active lava dome complex located at the base of the Santa María Volcano in western Guatemala. It emerged in 1922 within the massive scar left by Santa María's catastrophic 1902 eruption. Since its birth, Santiaguito has been active almost continuously, making it one of the world's most extensively studied examples of lava dome growth. The complex consists of four primary domes: El Caliente, La Mitad, El Monje, and El Brujo, with El Caliente currently being the most active center. Eruptions are typically characterized by dense ash plumes, pyroclastic flows, and the slow extrusion of viscous dacite lava. For residents of surrounding villages and lower-altitude plantations, the volcano poses a persistent threat from mudflows (lahars) and ashfall. Scientists from across the globe visit the site to monitor the dynamics of dome formation and associated volcanic hazards. The constant reshaping of the landscape by new volcanic deposits makes Santiaguito a fascinating yet hazardous natural phenomenon.
