Fuentes Georginas

Fuentes Georginas is Guatemala's most famous hot spring destination, located high in the mist-shrouded mountains near Quetzaltenango. Visitors come to soak in the sulfurous, volcanic-heated pools that are believed to have medicinal properties. The contrast between the cool mountain air and the steaming water creates a surreal, spa-like atmosphere that is first-rate for relaxation after hiking the nearby volcanoes. The springs are tucked into a lush cloud forest on the slopes of the Zunil volcano. Ferns, mosses, and exotic flowers thrive in the constant humidity, making the site feel like a hidden tropical garden. A small restaurant on-site serves typical Guatemalan mountain food, such as pepián (a rich meat stew) and hot chocolate, which is particularly comforting in the chilly highlands. Access is via a steep, winding road from the town of Zunil; most visitors hire a 'tuctuc' or join a shuttle from Quetzaltenango.
