San Juan Ostuncalco is a historically and culturally significant municipality in the Quetzaltenango Department, renowned for its rich indigenous heritage. The town is situated in the western highlands at an impressive elevation of approximately 2500 meters, resulting in a cool mountain climate. Ostuncalco is a central hub for the Mam Mayan culture, with the majority of the population still speaking the Mam language and practicing traditional customs. Historically, the region was an important part of the pre-Columbian K'iche' empire and later served as an administrative center during the colonial era. The local economy is driven by the animated Sunday market, one of the most important in the region, and by agriculture, particularly the cultivation of potatoes and onions. The town's artisans are also famous for crafting wooden musical instruments. Every June, the community celebrates its patron saint, John the Baptist, with a blend of Catholic rites and indigenous ceremonies that highlight the region's cultural syncretism.
