Cantel is a historically significant municipality in the Quetzaltenango Department, widely regarded as the cradle of modern industry in Guatemala. The town is situated in the western highlands at an elevation of about 2300 meters on the banks of the Samalá River. Cantel gained fame with the founding of the 'Fábrica de Cantel' in 1874, a textile factory that was the first of its kind in Central America and decisively shaped the economic development of the entire region. The factory remains operational today and stands as a landmark of the country's industrial pioneering spirit. Culturally, Cantel is a stronghold for the K'iche' Maya, who make up a large portion of the population and proudly preserve their traditions, attire, and language. The geographical proximity to the Samalá River not only provided power for industry but also defines the natural beauty of the surroundings. Every August, the community celebrates its festival in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption with traditional dances and religious ceremonies. Cantel represents a unique blend of industrial heritage and bustling indigenous culture.
