Battle of Quetzaltenango (Guatemala)

Weather…

The Battle of Quetzaltenango in February 1524 was a decisive turning point in the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. In this clash, Spanish forces led by Pedro de Alvarado faced the army of the K'iche' Maya. The battle took place near the modern city of Quetzaltenango and ended in a Spanish victory, primarily due to the use of cavalry and superior weaponry. According to popular legend, a duel occurred during the battle between Alvarado and the K'iche' hero Tecún Umán, in which the latter was killed. The death of Tecún Umán symbolizes the end of organized K'iche' resistance against the invaders. Following the battle, the area was brought under Spanish control, and the city of Quetzaltenango (Xelajú) was established. Historically, this event marks the beginning of the colonial era in the western highlands of Guatemala. Today, Tecún Umán is honored as a national hero of Guatemala.
