💡 Tips
- Visit on a weekend to experience the famous Feria Gastronómica (Food Festival) in the central plaza.
- Tuk-tuks are cheap and the easiest way to get to the nearby waterfalls if you don't want to hike.
- The hike to Chorros de la Calera is short but can be slippery, so wear shoes with good grip.
- The climate is slightly cooler than the coast, so a light jacket is useful in the evenings.
- ATMS can run out of cash during busy festival weekends, so bring enough bills from larger cities.

Juayúa is a photogenic town in the Sonsonate Department, famous for its weekend food festivals and impressive natural landscapes. Its name means "River of the Purple Orchids" in Nahuatl, highlighting the natural beauty of its surroundings in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec biosphere reserve. The town is characterized by its late 19th-century architecture and the Black Christ of Juayúa, a revered statue housed in the colonial-style church of Santa Lucía. Every weekend, the central plaza transforms into a bustling gastronomic market where visitors can sample traditional Salvadoran dishes and exotic meats. Beyond the town center, the "Los Chorros de la Calera" waterfalls are a major attraction, consisting of several cascades that emerge directly from the mountainside.
